Although we have done great strides in technology, we are still in the process of deciphering the usefulness of plants in our lives. Living in this concrete jungle, we are yet to realize the astounding benefits that the nature can impart in our lives through trees. Without them, earth would not have been a hospitable place for mankind. When correctly grown indoors, many of them can not only provide our homes with fresh air but also clean the air of impurities

Money plant (Epipremnum aureum)

Money plant is lung’s best friend. Originally from central and south America, this plant is abundantly found in our country.  It is very easy to grow and can survive with very little care. It will grow even in a piece of bottle. It removes formaldehyde and carbon monoxide (CO) and improves the air quality. The advantage of them is that they do not need water every day. It grows in bright to semi-dark light, but no direct sunlight. A peat moss based potting mix with added mixture of perlite or sand is best for growing it. The best place to keep it is on your bedside table.  You can bathe the plant every morning to wash off all the pollutants and toxins it had absorbed and keep it back in the vase/pot. A balanced fertilizer of Nitrogen: Phosphorus: Potassium (NPK) in the proportion 8:8:8 is ideal for its growth. 40-50 stems in 5 eight inch pots is suffice for a person.

Areca palm (Dypsis lutescens)

Growing naturally in Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands, these palms work like air purifiers by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. They need heavy watering and well-drained soil. A balanced fertilizer of Nitrogen: Phosphorus: Potassium (NPK) diluted by half is ideal for its growth. 4 shoulder high plants are required per person, which can be kept in living rooms beside doors and windows.

Mother-in-law’s tongue or snake plant (sansevieria trifasciata)

This south African beauty can survive months of neglect and harsh conditions. It can absorb harmful toxins such as nitrogen oxide, xylene, carbon monoxide, benzene and formaldehyde. They produce oxygen at night, even at dark which makes it a perfect bedroom plant. These plants are especially useful in fish eating households and also in cities like Chennai and Mumbai which are located by the sea. They remove trimethylamine which has a fishy odour. It requires moist soil and bright, indirect light for its growth. Six plants per person is ideal for beneficial effect.

Bamboo or reed palm

Tt is best kept in large terrace or open lawns in the house. It can also be kept indoors especially because it can lessen the off gassing from furniture. They remove formaldehyde and act as a natural humidifier and air purifier. They do not require any soil or fertilizer to grow and can be kept in water. 4 shoulder high plants are needed per person for beneficial effect.
